Why do some people have dry eyes? With some, it's environmental, others it's their physiology, but the biggest contributing factor to dry eye syndrome is age. As we get older, the tear function decreases causing the stinging, itchy, gritty feeling. Other factors include allergies, your living or working conditions or your medications. To understand dry eye, we need a short physiology tutorial. The eyes make two different types of tears: the lubricating tears and the reflex tears. Let's take the lubricating tears for example. These tears are produced as we go throughout our day. They're made up of a balance of mucous, water, oil, nutrient proteins and antibodies that protect your ocular surface. These tears are like worker tears which steadily produce to keep your eyes moist and healthy.
